Highway 1 and 101, San Diego to the Olympic Peninsula. One road, four days, and a slide report to read first.
Pacific Coast Highway is the run, not a city. Highway 1 and Highway 101 from San Diego to the Olympic Peninsula is about 1,500 miles and takes four unhurried days. Big Sur is the part everyone comes for and the part most likely to be shut: the cliffs slide, the road closes for months at a time, and checking the current status is the first thing you do, not the last.
North of that it is the Redwood Highway through the state parks, the Oregon coast with a viewpoint every few miles, and the Olympic Peninsula loop at the top. It is slower than the map suggests, the light is best early and late, and fog can take a whole morning off you.
This chapter exists so that the run gets done properly: current closures, where the fuel actually is on the empty sections, which viewpoints are worth the stop, and members along the route who will meet you for a coffee or let you leave a car overnight.
For any car or motorcycle owner in California, Oregon and Washington. Open with approval, and an ownership photo so chapter runs are made of real vehicles.
What happens here: live closure and detour reports for Big Sur and the northern sections, staged route cards for two, four and seven day runs, fuel and overnight planning for the empty stretches, photography stops that are worth the pull off, members along the coast offering a meeting point or a driveway, and post trip write ups with what actually happened.
